Delhi To Chennai Bike Transport Basics: Distance, Time, And Why It Varies
Chennai is not on the direct line from Delhi the way Mumbai is. The truck goes south through central India first and only then swings east, so expect this route to run slightly longer than the kilometre count suggests.
At about 2,180 km the transit is 6–8 days. Treat that as the time the vehicle is moving, and keep one more day free on either side for pickup and for taking delivery. The route normally follows NH44 down to Hyderabad or Bangalore and then the Chennai highways, which makes it one of the longest hauls on our list.
| Road distance | About 2,180 km |
|---|---|
| Standard transit | 6–8 days |
| Express transit | 4–6 days |
| Starting price (commuter bike) | ₹6,550 onwards |
| Pickup | Delhi and NCR (Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad) |
| Delivery | Door delivery in Chennai and nearby areas |

Why the timing changes
Cyclones and heavy north-east monsoon rain between October and December can hold trucks up around Chennai. Outside that window the schedule is steady.
Besides that, four things move the date more than anything else:
- How often carriers leave for Chennai. A bike booked on a day when a vehicle is already loading leaves sooner than one that waits for a full load.
- Season. Rain on the west side from June to September and the north-east monsoon on the east coast from October to December slow trucks. Winter fog affects only the first day out of Delhi.
- Where you are in the NCR. Pickup from Delhi proper is quickest. If you are in Gurgaon, Noida or Faridabad, mention your sector when you ask for the quote.
- Who receives it. A delivery that needs an RWA letter or gate pass takes longer than one where the driver can park outside and hand over.
How to Ship my Bike! - 3 Ways To Transport Your Bike From Delhi To Chennai
People usually ask which method is best, and the honest answer depends on distance, the bike, and how much you want to handle yourself.
1. Door-to-door by covered carrier
A trained crew wraps the bike, straps it to a frame inside a covered vehicle, and the same company takes it to your Chennai address. For most people this is the sensible choice: about ₹6,550 to ₹8,950 for a commuter bike, 6–8 days on the road, and nothing for you to arrange apart from being there at both ends. Read more on our door-to-door bike transport page.
2. Railway parcel
On this distance, parcel trains involve more than one connection, and a bike left at a transfer station gets damaged more often than one on a single carrier. If you do try it, book a direct service where possible, and ask the parcel office at Chennai whether they take two-wheelers. More on that in our train vs truck guide.
3. Ride it yourself
2,180 km means 6 days of riding and 5 hotel nights. Fuel alone is about ₹4,600 for a commuter and about ₹6,900 for a 350cc bike. It is a real trip, not a relocation tool, and a long ride ages tyres, chain and brakes. Few people do it for a house move.

At this distance, a covered carrier is the only practical way to move the bike, unless you want an adventure. We handle everything from motorcycles and scooters to Royal Enfield and sports bikes.
Delhi To Chennai Bike Transport Costs: What You’re Really Paying For
Here are the numbers for a bike going from Delhi to Chennai. They include standard packing, loading, GST and door pickup and delivery. Insurance is optional and comes on top.
| Bike type | Price range (incl. GST) | Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Scooter / moped (up to 125cc) | ₹6,000 – ₹7,950 | 6–8 days |
| Commuter bike (100–160cc) | ₹6,550 – ₹8,950 | 6–8 days |
| Royal Enfield / cruiser (350–650cc) | ₹7,850 – ₹10,950 | 6–8 days |
| Sports bike (300cc+) | ₹12,400 – ₹17,350 | 6–8 days |
| Superbike (650cc+) | Quoted after we know the exact model | |
Where the money goes (commuter bike, mid-range quote of ₹7,750)
| Item | Approx. amount |
|---|---|
| Line-haul freight (Delhi to Chennai) | ₹5,000 |
| Loading, strapping and standard wrap | ₹800 |
| Door pickup and door delivery | ₹750 |
| GST at 18% | ₹1,200 |
| Total | ₹7,750 |
What can change the final figure
- Transit insurance: optional cover at 2.5% of what you declare, never below ₹300. Declare ₹90,000 and it comes to about ₹2,250 plus GST.
- Express delivery: adds about 25% to the transport portion and brings the time down to 4–6 days.
- Waiting time: a driver held up for hours at either end may bill for the wait. Ask what the rule is before you book.
- Depot instead of door: if you can bring the bike to a hub or collect it from one, the ₹750 door charge and its GST drop off.
- Premium wrap: adds about ₹900 for extra padding and a crate-style frame, worth it for a new or high-value bike.
The price rises with distance, but not in a straight line. The first few hundred kilometres cost more per km than the rest, because loading, packing and paperwork are fixed. The Safety Checklist Before You Pay Any Advance for Bike Shipping from Delhi
Most complaints about bike shipping start with a rushed advance payment. Before you send money, run through this list.
- Get the quote in writing. It should name the pickup address, the Chennai delivery address, packing, insurance, GST and the days promised.
- Ask if the bike stays on one vehicle. Over 2,180 km, a transfer at a hub is where most damage and delay happen.
- Prepare the bike. Keep fuel to about a litre, tape or disconnect the battery lead, remove loose accessories and keep one key with you. Our how to prepare your bike guide covers the rest.
- Pay into a business account and take an invoice. A transfer to someone's personal number with no bill leaves you with nothing to show later.
- Verify who you are paying. A genuine company will give you a GST number, a registered address and an office phone. Check them, and read the Google reviews.
- Keep the advance small. A booking amount is normal. Anyone who wants the full payment before the bike has even been picked up deserves suspicion.
- Inspect at pickup. Shoot photos or a short video of every side of the bike, note the odometer, and get a condition sheet signed by the crew.
- Plan the Chennai delivery. OMR has IT-park traffic through most of the day, so deliveries to Sholinganallur or Navalur are scheduled early morning.
Documents You Usually Need for Bike Transport from Delhi to Chennai (And When NOC Matters)
Crew at pickup will ask for a short set of documents. Registration in Tamil Nadu is a separate job that you do after the bike arrives.
- RC (registration certificate): a copy goes with the bike, and the original stays with you.
- ID proof: Aadhaar, driving licence or passport of the owner.
- Addresses and phone numbers: a working contact and a landmark at the Delhi end and at the Chennai end.
- Valid insurance: a copy of the bike's current policy.
- Finance NOC: if the bike is on a loan (hypothecation), a letter from the bank or NBFC allowing the move.
- Authorisation letter: if someone other than the owner hands over or receives the bike, with their ID.
When NOC matters
The transport itself runs without an NOC. The need comes up when you register the bike in Tamil Nadu: the old registration works there for twelve months, and after that a new number is required. Delhi's transport office gives the NOC, and a financed bike needs the lender's clearance before it can.
Chennai is split across several RTO offices (Anna Nagar, Meenambakkam and Tiruvanmiyur are some of them), and you re-register at the one that covers your residence address.
Keep two things in mind. A BH (Bharat) series plate does not need re-registration after a state change, if you are eligible for one. And rules for older vehicles in Delhi–NCR have shifted over the years, so confirm the current position for your bike's age before you book. Step-By-Step Booking Process of Bike Transport from Delhi to Chennai: Pickup To Delivery
Here is the sequence on a typical booking. Our how it works page has more detail.
- Send your details. The form above takes a minute. We need the bike model, whether it starts, and the two addresses: one in Gurgaon Sector 56 or elsewhere in Delhi NCR, one in Chennai.
- Confirm the booking. Check the days and the price, then pay the booking amount. Keep the receipt; you will need it at delivery.
- Clear the bike. Remove the helmet lock gadgets, mirrors-mounted cameras and luggage. Keep one key and the RC with you.
- Handover in Janakpuri or nearby. The crew walks around the bike with you, notes every mark, ties it down and hands you the condition sheet.
- On the road. The carrier follows NH44 down to Hyderabad or Bangalore and then the Chennai highways. Ask for a call at the main halts; that is normal on a 2,180 km run.
- Delivery slot. The driver calls before arrival. Share the exact address, gate and a person who can sign.
- Inspect and close. Match the bike to the pickup photos, start it, and note any damage on the paper before you sign and pay.
In Chennai we usually deliver to OMR, Velachery, Tambaram, Anna Nagar, Adyar and Porur. OMR has IT-park traffic through most of the day, so deliveries to Sholinganallur or Navalur are scheduled early morning.

Mistakes People Make On This Bike Shipping Route (And How You Avoid Them)
- Skipping the photos. Without pickup photos, a damage claim becomes your word against theirs.
- Leaving accessories on. Mirrors, GPS holders, saddlebags and phone mounts go missing or break. Take them off.
- Not checking who signs. Whoever signs at delivery accepts the bike as is, so have the right person there.
- A mistake specific to Chennai. Moving a bike in November without checking the weather outlook. If a cyclone alert is out, ask the carrier whether they will hold the vehicle at a safe hub instead of pushing ahead.
- Not planning the drop. Typical delivery areas include OMR, Velachery, Tambaram, Anna Nagar, Adyar and Porur. OMR has IT-park traffic through most of the day, so deliveries to Sholinganallur or Navalur are scheduled early morning.
